Run Skype From Your Thumbdrive

Recently, I’ve covered a topic on portable applications and I believe that more and more people would want to make full use of their existing thumbdrive.skypeport

One application that is not in the list of portable applications on the portableapps.com website is Skype.

Skype, as you all know, is the most used VOIP application and almost majority of the desktops and laptops in the world will have Skype installed in their PC.

Best of all, now you can make it portable and run it on your thumbdrive.

Cool ……. lets’ begin.

Make Your Applications Portable On A Stick

Being an IT administrator, I have always wanting to make life simpler for myself; i.e. to carry my programs (or program files) and use them whenever I  go.

A laptop is a good mobility tool but sometimes you can’t possibly use it at work or carry it everywhere ( do note my Lenovo is like 3kg and the battery life last for about an hour and a half on full charge).

Though this is a laptop blog, I would also like to share with you technologies that can be made much more simpler for us users.

I’ve recently made my imation Flash Go! USB drive a portable application.flashgo

To make my explanation sounds simpler, I can now run my office suite, browser, chat program, media player,  password manager tool, anti-virus, pdf reader, e-mail client and much more … all from my USB thumbdrive.

That’s a lot of stuffs there and my thumdrive is only 4 Gb, so how is this possible?

Will 2 Anti-Virus Makes My Laptop Safer?

The answer to the question above is definately no.anti-virus

But can you install 2 antivirus on one laptop. A definate “YES” except some antivirus from Norton &  McAfee.

This question normally poped out by overally corncerned laptop users and I’m not very surprised by these questions as privacy and security are the main agendas in these questions to be made.

One thing for sure ….. you do not and need not install 2 or more antivirus in your laptop.

But ….

WinRAR Is Never Free

In the digital downloading world of the internet, there are quite a number of files that we download and one of the most popular files types are in .rar formats.

Contarary to this, the .zip file formats is also popular but you can still able to extract this file from your laptop from your in-built Windows file extraction wizard (that is provided you are using Windows XP or above).  You need not install WinZip (a third party software) and mind you that WinZip is neither FREE either.

WinRAR on the the other hand is not FREE ($29 for one user license) but if you’ve download a .rar file format ….. what can you do?

I received a call yesterday for a friend who is having this problem while using his laptop. Immediately, I recommend him to install 7-Zip, an open-source compression tool that is able to extract a .RAR file format.

There are numerous file compression tool out there and you have to be certain which is the one that suits you.

The 3 most popular FREE file compression softwares to date are Zip Genius, IZArc and 7-Zip. Unfortunately Zip Genius does not support .RAR file formats. Unlike the free ones mentioned, none of them is able to create a .RAR file and the only that you can do it is via WinRAR :P .

Clear Up Google Chrome

As you know Google Chrome has been around for a while and to tell you frankly it is one of my favorite browsers on my laptop to date.

There are a couple like Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, Opera and many others but what I really like about Google Chrome is the speed.

However there are certain features in Google Chrome that is not up to my preference like the menu and clearing of private data.

Although there is a button from settings icon that says “Clear browsing data”,  it does not actually cleared all the data cleanly …. hmmm …..

Portable Apps - The Way To Go?

There’s been such a buzz recently on portable applications, if you might have noticed.

Well …… let’s first define portable applications or portable apps in short.

Portable apps allows you to run your favourites programs (program files) by merely using a thumbdrive or flash drive.

Which means, if you’re a designer and need to finish up your work by using other computer which does not have that particular program file such as Adobe Falsh Professional for example, you can have that program file in your thumbdrive and still have that particular application working in any computer.

There are some pros and cons regarding this however

Laptop Tools : Notepad ++

I was working on my laptop for the past month or so doing some C language for my final year project (which explains the lack of posts I’ve done recently) and I was testing out this new software called Notepad ++.

We already know that there is a tiny but powerful Windows utility in notepad, but there are still rooms on improvement on it. What about wordpad?

Well, if you are a programmer (although to tell you frankly I hate programming in C) just like me , then Notepad  ++ is a great tool on top of the current notepad.

This is because Notepad ++ supports various file extension code from ASP to PHP to CSS any many more …….
