Software That Can Make Us Extra Lazy

The signs are there …. and it’s true.

One of the main reasons softwares are invented are to make, we, users simplified our jobs on the PC and so on. The other aspect it can make us complacent and lazy as well.

When it comes to speech recognition softwares, there’s 2 ways you can think about it …. make it easier or make us lazier.

I was browsing through the internet yesterday and I was in awe when I saw the demo of this software, the “Dragon  Naturally Speaking 10″ speech recognition software.

It actually computes what you say in speech and actually processes commands to the computer via you talking without you actually touching the keyboard.

Event Viewer Logs Tells You Your Windows Problems

The Event Viewer? What’s that?

These are the questions I received often and to tell you frankly, it took me about 10 minutes at least to educate my friends on what is event viewer, why it is useful and when you wanted to know what happen to your laptop or PC.

The event  viewer is the least used and most under-rated tool (and I mean that) by fellow Windows users. The event viewer is simply a log which notes any instance of the operating system.

Let me explain in a much easier term.

I give an example :- When an application (let’s say Windows Explorer crashes), this instance will be logged to the event viewer.

The screenshot above shows there’s an error with the NetLogon and an error indication will be further explained once you double click on that error information.

Change The Looks Of Your Theme Safely

I’m attending my first ever Microsoft Certification (MCITP -Windows Server 2008 Server Administration) course right and during the break time i think why not I do another post for you guys.

Ever since Windows XP Service Pack 3 is released, changes made to Windows theme function has been more stricter  than ever.

Unlike what it used to be, just by renaming and overwriting uxtheme.dll can solved the problem in less than a minute …. it doesn’t seems that way …. well not until now.

There are 2 ways actually to change the theme of your Windows and apply third party ones to your desktop.

I’ll show how how to do it and where to get fantastic themes as well for free as what you see below.

Cablenut Optimized Settings For Windows

Since I’ve downgraded to Windows XP on my Lenovo laptop recently, I did suffer a slight dip in my internet surfing.

This is because unlike Vista, XP is only based in IPV4 protocol wherelse in Windows Vista you have IPV6 protocol to support internet connection bandwidth.

But one thing good about XP, is that, you can tweak settings ( that includes internet, themes and performance) to your hearts desire.

Being a great hobbyist on tweaking, I decided to do some tweaking on the internet connection settings.

I’ve downloaded a software called Cablenut.

With Cablenut I can set internet optimized setting in the registry directly via this software.

Let’s me share your my setting and it has improved my connectivity by 60%.

Install Your OS In Your Thumbdrive

Based on my previous post, you have remember that I will post a topic on how you can use your thumbdrive as a boot install.

Since my laptop is pretty screwed, I decided to take up this challenge of doing so.windowsxpliveusbedition_wm

If you realized, Linux based operating system are the ones who started the idea of an OS USB installer, notably Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux.

What about Windows?

Bye Bye Vista, Hello XP?

Well most of you will think that I will be saying hello Windows 7, hmm …. not really…vis

The past 2 days has been quite horrifying for me. I decided to finally bow out of Windows Vista and welcome back Windows XP on my Lenovo Y300 laptop.

Well it’s an unthinkable thought but I finally gave up on Vista due to the following reasons.

Here’s  my take on Vista.

  1. The constant prompts like allowing file operation to proceed and so on is damn annoying and performance is by far slagging even thought I’ve upgraded my RAM to 3GB.
  2. It took me 5 minutes to transfer 1 GB of data from my Local D drive to my external 1TB Western Digital Hard drive in XP but in Vista it tooks me over 45 minutes!
  3. There are a couple of sites that hangs upon browsing…. which finally lead me to this downgrading process.

Before you perform any downgrading there are a couple of things you MUST take note.

Use n-Lite To Make Your Customized Windows CD

There will 2 angles when people look at the title.

One - Some people may think I’m talking about piracy, which is simply NOT what I going to talk about.n-lite

OR

Two - It’s another crazy idea which can be sensible and realistic.

Here’s the scenario:-
You have a habit of formating your laptop or desktop most of the time. During re-formatting, you will have to get ready all the the CDs associated to the process; 1 CD/DVD for the Windows Operating System and maybe a couple of  cds for drivers. After that, if you are a tweaker you might have to tweak your Windows (disabling this and that).

What n-Lite does for you is compile everything to 1 media which is  a CD or DVD.

Think of this, you will only need 1 CD or DVD to complete the whole process of installing the operating system, drivers and hotfixes.
