PDF Importer For Open Office 3

Recently (well its yesterday actually), I did a post on the new Open Office 3.0.pdf import

One of the functions that thrills me with the new Open Office 3.0 is definitely the PDF Importer.

Finally a freeware that allows you to edit your PDF file (well it’s a long wait really :P ).

Unfortunately this is NOT part of the installation files but it is an extension or add-on to the Open Office 3.0 suite. Do note this extension does not work with earlier versions of Open Office.

It is one of the hottest downloads of the moment; so HOT that it has already reach 254749 downloads at the moment and 58382 downloads from this week already.

What’s more users from various platforms are able to enjoy this breakthrough function. Windows, Mac OSX, Solaris and even Linux (x32 and x64) users can use this powerful tool on their already FREE Open Office 3.0.

Open Office Release 3.0

The alternative office suite for PCs (laptops included), OpenOffice.org, has now released version 3.0 of its office suite.

There are many new features in this new suite and for the first time ever ” a PDF importer”.

Which means you can import you pdf files …. edit them up and save as a document, spreadsheet, presentation or draw file (something Microsoft haven’t come out with :) ).

Though Microsoft has been working with third party ….. Able2Extract on this function to be in the future releases of Microsoft Office suites, Sun Microsystems has leapfrog a step further with this release.

Need Office 2007 File Formats?

If you are working on a Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier suite on your laptop and you wanted to perform operations like opening, editing and saving your documents, spreadsheets and presentations with the file formats of Office 2007 …… now you can.

The tip is to download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack.

With this tool, you can retain the current Microsoft Office suite that you are using plus the ability to perform your works on the Microsoft Office 2007 based files.

How do you if it is a Microsoft Office 2007 format?

Simple ….. anything that ends with an “x” alphabet like (.docx for words), (.xlsx for excel) and (.pptx for powerpoint) are the xml based and the new Microsoft Office 2007 file formats.

It would great if you have the full featured Office 2007 suite as you can enjoy a feature-rich product with a lot of great enhancements.

I Sold 2 NEC E6300 Laptops!

Well not really though.

I had 2 working colleagues of mine who wanted to get themselves a personal laptop and need me to be their adviser. ( :) I feel like a V.I.P somehow)

Anyway I’ve been going through the lists of brochures from all the booths ….. and boy it’s hard to make a decision, mind you.

Normally I will narrow down to 3 models based the value-for-money criteria due to the fact my friends aren’t gamers and they are basically getting a new notebook for surfing for office work purposes.

I had to bring my 3 year old son along on that day which were packed with enthusiastic buyers gunning for the bargain items on display. Then after much research I had recommended both my friends the NEC E6300 notebook.

Check out the specs below:-

Intel Centrino Duo CPU processing at 2.0GHz, 160GB of Hard disk space, 3GB Ram (after free upgrade), 2.0 megapixels in-built webcam, Bluetooth and Wireless (G) networking built-in, interactive touchpad & hotkeys, DVD-Dual Layer built in and it comes with Windows Vista Home Premium operating system.

Well the shock part is, this 14.1 inch notebook that weighs about 2.38kg cost about SGD$1499.

And that’s not all, apart from its white-leathery finishing on the back of the LCD, it comes together with freebies such as cleaning kit, an optical mouse, a NEC laptop bag and a free one-year subscription of Norman anti-virus.

I’m pleased that my friends were happy on that day, and why not they got a steal of a deal!

My son and I also enjoy the atmosphere very much on that day ….. and it’s been quite an experience.

Laptop Note : MS Windows And MS Office

This is the confusing part whenever a newbie approaches me for advice on getting a new notebook.

Though most of you understand the difference between a Microsoft Windows operating system and Microsoft Office, there are still a minority which still finds this rather misleading.

How come?

I was approached recently by a friend of mine who wanted to buy a new Dell Inspirion notebook computer. As per normal, he asked me for my opinions on the notebook and other technical stuffs like battery life, etc.

But what surprised me is that, he keep mentioning MS Excel, Words and Powerpoint when I looked at the bundled offer there isn’t any. Microsoft Works was not even in the bundled!

After a while I understand that he was confused about the Windows and Office products.

Seems both are products by Microsoft, there are a few users whom may think it is always a bundled.

Microsoft has separated Windows (Operating System) and Office (document, spreadsheet and presentation) and this ain’t something new.

I believed Dell might have include a 30 day trial in the package, though it is not written in the newspaper article showed to me by my friend.

Anyway for new users out there whom might still be getting a new notebook for the coming new year always remember that Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office are two different products completely.

Your notebook computer manufacturer will always (most of the time) bundled you with the operating system but not necessarily the Office applications software.

But if you want a free and open source version of Office, you can always download OpenOffice.org .
