Troubleshoot Unmountable Boot Volume BSOD
I recently a panic call from a friend stating that her laptop has a BSOD while booting up.

As you seen above, this is another case of a corrupted boot menu which is a very common thing on a Windows XP operating system.
How to solve it?
The recovery console , what better way…..
This is one of the easiest BSODs so far I’ve troubleshooted.
You will need your Windows operating system / recovery disc with you before you begin.
Now for the step by step …..
- Boot up your PC with the Windows XP disc in the tray. Make you you set your BIOS setting to boot from CD rom.
- Next choose the second option to repair via recovery console.
- Upon entering choose 1 to repair C drive.
- Next type chkdsk /r to begin repair.
That’s it. The process might take 30 to 50 minutes depending on PCs hardware devices. Word of advice, “Please Be Patient”
.
After the process is completed, type exit and restart the PC. It should be able to work fine after that.

Hi, I got same problem with UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME right now. But when CD is booted does not show the welcome screen or recovery option. It goes directly to HD partitions decision to be formatted after all files were loaded. What can I do in this case? Thanks so much for all your support on this matter. P.S.: The CD version is an unattended Windows XP.
The main thing is to make sure that the Windows XP proceed to the menu where you can choose the option of a recovery console.
If the unattended disc brings you straight to the partitions area, it is impossible for you to begin the repair there.
Try borrowing a Windows XP disc from a friend that allows you to boot via the recovery console.
