A few of my friends kept asking me to put this post online and now it is finally up.
What are the things you need to consider when performing a RAM upgrade?
This is the common question and sadly enough more than 50% of the time, users mistaken bought the wrong RAM module, when back to the shop for and exchange and end having an argument with the retail store owner if they refuse to oblige to you.
Time consuming is one bad factor, end up with a nasty debate another.
I will share you some tips as to what are the important facts to look out for before doing an upgrade.
Firstly:-
Download CPU-Z
For those of you who is reading about CPU-Z for the first time, it is actually a software that tells you what is the details of your PC/laptop components without you actually opening the hardware itself.

Click on to the “SPD” tab. This tab will tell you what type, clock speed and other information pertaining to the RAM module you are using on your laptop.
Important areas to take note are as follows:-
- The Slot - This will tell you whether you have sufficient slots left for upgrade. Some laptops have only one slot which means the only upgrade to to change the whole RAM module.
- Max Bandwidth - This is the utmost important factor. If you have an extra empty slot, you must find the module with the exact “clock speed”. An example would be DDR2 (PC-533).

If the methods above doesn’t help, bring your laptop to the nearest PC store and ask the retailer to help you out on the upgrade.
Just for you information, if the brand you are looking for is not available you can still perform the upgrade but with the 2 important aspects as what I’ve mentioned above.
