Run Skype From Your Thumbdrive
Recently, I’ve covered a topic on portable applications and I believe that more and more people would want to make full use of their existing thumbdrive.
One application that is not in the list of portable applications on the portableapps.com website is Skype.
Skype, as you all know, is the most used VOIP application and almost majority of the desktops and laptops in the world will have Skype installed in their PC.
Best of all, now you can make it portable and run it on your thumbdrive.
Cool ……. lets’ begin.
Recovery Console Boot Up Tip
Remember when there is a time when you start your laptop and it keeps on loading for a while and then it restarts. This contiues on and on …. again and again.
No matter how you try to overcome this ….. you end up in sheer frustration.

Well, if you’re using XP, you can always use the automatic repair function but what if the automatic repair function tell you that it is an “UNKNOWN” partition?
I have faced this problem a couple of times with my clients PCs and the fast way to overcome is NOT the F- word ( in a gentle manner re-formatting).
Using the command prompt recovery console is a good solution and once you are familiar with this one …. it’s a snap.
Firstly … boot up and proceed to your recover console environment.
- Next choose the drive…. by default it is 1 - which stands for your C drive.
- Type chkdsk to run a scan on your disk.
- After the chkdsk have ended, type fixboot C:
- Finally type BOOTCFG /rebuild to fix your boot up files.
You might be prompted whether you want to attempt this operation. Just choose Yes or type Y and proceed
What it does it fix up your boot up files. For the UNKNOWN partition, once your boot up files is corrupted it messes your partition. And don’t worry, by doing this, your data will be untouched.

Defragment Issues In Win98 Laptop
I received a call from a friend today and he told me he is unable to defragment his laptop.
It came to huge surpise that his laptop is still running Windows 98SE operating system!
WHOA !!!!!
To backtrack to today, it is an operating system most considered extinct and definately want to forget. It’s been 10 years since its release and within that 10 years cycle we have seen Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista came into existence.
The answer to why people are still using Windows 98SE …… is somewhat a mystery but anyway because it was a friend of mine so I decided to help out.
If you encounter your Windows 98SE laptop having problems with Disk Defragmentation and having an error that says “Defrag004” then you would have to perform a scan disk first before proceeding.
For those who are very familiar with MS-Dos command prompt, type scandisk /all/Autofix .
Then proceed the defragmentation as per normal. The defragmentation process should run as it is.
Will 2 Anti-Virus Makes My Laptop Safer?
The answer to the question above is definately no.
But can you install 2 antivirus on one laptop. A definate “YES” except some antivirus from Norton & McAfee.
This question normally poped out by overally corncerned laptop users and I’m not very surprised by these questions as privacy and security are the main agendas in these questions to be made.
One thing for sure ….. you do not and need not install 2 or more antivirus in your laptop.
But ….
