Is The Eee PC The Next Generation Laptop?
Is what I mentioning in the title of this post is true?
Well …… maybe but not with a sonic boom though
For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Eee PC is a smaller kind of notebook introduced by one of the notable brands in the computer world, ASUS.
Asus has recently introduced the Eee PC brand and, from my point of view, it is not a bad offering by them.
The Eee PC was showcased earlier this year at the CES 2008 in Las Vegas and to top it all up, it actually received a great response for this tiny machine.
I’ll be doing an in-depth review on one the Eee PCs later in future but for those of you who might not figure out what the actual Eee PC is; here’s a segment by Unwired for you guys to check out.
My Laptop Linux Experience (Part 2)
Well I kinda feel betrayed and backfired at the same time.
Not that I’m saying Linux is bad, but really I overcame a lot of issues since the migration.
Well “Crazy Izzy” (that’s me) is just going to get crazier.
The experience of using PCLinuxOS, a Linux distribution which is number 1 for more than 6 months doesn’t “wow” me much.
In any case, maybe it’s just me, I encountered numerous issues, like system freezes …. unable to read card drivers, etc while using the system.
It’s kinda bad to say “PCLinuxOS sucks” cause it’s actually a good operating system actually but it just not cut out for my experience.
Lets check out the advantages and disadvantages (or should I say problems) that I’ve encountered.

My Laptop Linux Experience (Part 1)
I´ve been busy trying out the Linux platform and installing it on my 4 year old Twinhead Efio notebook computer.
The distro i´ve tested is of course currently ranked number 1 on Distrowatch - PCLinuxOS.
I’ll layout the reasons as to why I choosing PCLinuxOS to the other popular distros like Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mepis and others.

Asus Released 1 TeraByte Notebook!
Yes, you heard it right.
It was at this premier event (CES 2008 in Las Vegas) that Asus, one of the leading notebook makers in the world, unveil the gem of the new year.
The M70 and M50 are the 2 models designed to have this mighty storage capacity.
However the difference between these 2 models apart from the rest is that, the Asus M50 and M70 are using 2 (500Gb) to meet up the storage needed as per required.
Well, this simply means that normal notebooks are using 1 hard disk; these 2 models are using 2 hdds!
The M50 is stated to have a 15.4 inch LCD display, wherelse the M70 has a 17 inch.
As the you can see, this is a much anticipated notebook and may as well be a great replacement to the desktop in the near future.
Compression : Zip or RAR Your Laptop Files?
When it comes to compressing your notebook computer files, there’s always a debate on which is better.Zip or RAR?
Let’s look at the overall perspectives.
When it comes to compression (or should I say zipping) ……
Majority will relate this to WinZIP.
Take note : - WinZip is a software and it’s not the process of compression
Furthermore it will cost you $29.95 (basic version) or $49.95 (if you are going for the Pro version).
It is a trialware nonetheless and if you desired to use it after the evaluation period, you need to pay for it.
What about RAR then?
Much as similar to Zip, RAR is another compression file format.
However if you want to compress a file to a RAR, you need to use WinRAR another software as similar to WinZIP.
So which one is better?
Lets look at the advantages of the ZIP compression.
Zip compression is supported and can be converted by most of the compression softwares in the market. The fact that Zip is a standard format in compression, you can also use free softwares to create a Zip file. Not only that, Windows XP and Vista has an in-built Zip function for you to create and extract Zip files thus you may not need to install additional softwares to perform this function.
However if you’re going to extract a RAR file, you need compression softwares to open them.
There are softwares in the market that supports extracting RAR formats (even free softwares!) but to perform creation of a RAR file you can only do it using WinRAR.
Now let’s talk file compression sizes.
It is proven that RAR excels far better in compression than Zip.
How?
Take this example :-
I have a collection of pdf files which are needed to be compressed to a single file format.
The initial size = 5.2mB
Using Zip - the file size will be reduced to 4.6 mB
Using RAR - the file size will be reduced to 4.2 mB
To note : this is just a normal beginner’s test to compression.
The above sizes can be reduced much more further, an intermediate method and the file size can be reduced more significantly ….. especially with the RAR format.
Try out this test and tell me what you think?
