Laptop Dojo : Troubleshoot Windows XP Update Issues

It is another Tuesday again and asyou all know it is Microsoft Windows Update day.

By default, Mirosoft Windows will send update patches to all its users (be it an operating systems patch, office patch or service packs) on Tuesdays -  most being the second Tuesday of each month.

I have always learn a lot of my IT stuffs and skills from TechReublic which is a good source for some technical details be it in Linux, Windows or Mac.

Today, i’ll be bringing a series of Laptop Dojo - the first on how to:
Stop Windows XP from nagging you about updates you’ve already completed or don’t want.

It is a good tutorial and I think it will work for you and your Windows XP laptop.

Ladies Style Laptop Bags

One thing for sure that I  haven’t covered in this blog on the laptop accesories area is about laptop bags.

It is a very important accessory and without a laptop bag, how are you to carry your stronglaptop/strong around.

Anyway below is a clip by 2 lovely ladies who did a review on a couple of laptop bags …… ladies style. It is a bit different from the normal, plain, black in colour laptop bags which men tend to prefer.

Anyway enjoy this review and I’ll catch you later with another post from Laptop Info Today

Eco-Innovative Laptops By LG

Korea’s very own, LG, has leaked out pre-design laptops but has yet affirm a release date on their new environment friendly laptop dubbed the E-Book.

This concept machine has the ability to use less electricity due to change in the LCD hardware that it utilise. Unlike nomal which uses LCDs, this laptop is said to be powered by biofuel cell with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as its display. It even doesn’t need a frame to hold the display !

There’s also a change in the battery as it powered by natural gas, methanol, and other eco-friendly liquid fuels pack in a cylindrical hinge instead of the normal Li-Ion batteries.

Even though it has yet been released, this concept laptop has won the Red Dot Award, a German prize for industrial design, and you get a first glimpse of its usage in the next 007 : James Bond (Quantum of Solace) movie coming out very soon.

Laptop Money Out Of Surveys

I was doing my anonymous surfing yesterday (on my trusty old laptop of course) when i stumbled on this site AWSurveys.com.

For those who has been the internet long enough will know that AW Surveys is an online survey site that actually pays their registered users after completing a survey or a website evaluation; a range of $2 till $25 (not bad for a 5 till 10 minutes of work :) ).

I’ve never tried online surveys before but I did a buzz about it months ago and decided to give it a try.

Not bad for starters, I earned $6 just by doing a website evaluation and I complete that in less than 5 minutes.

Well the terms and conditions must be strictly followed as you must be aged 18 and above to register. No spamming is allowed and the maximum earning you can achieve per year (1 Jan ~ 31 Dec) is $550. Amounts more than that will be brought forward to the next year.

You can start redeeming your payment at a minimum amount of $75 which can be paid by check or money transfers (for U.S users) and Paypal for (both U.S and international users).

It’s fun and registration and creation of your account in AW Surveys is FREE.

Music Editing On Your Laptop

I was approached by one of my colleagues today for whom is having difficulty on how to edit and export his music (from .wav to .mp3) on his laptop.

He wanted to have this done using a freeware and of all the softwares he stumbled, it is all pay per use.

Well, I recommend a software called Audacity.

Audacity is a tiny music editor that works very well (even if it is running on a laptop) and the trick about getting your .wav file to export to .mp3 format is that you need to patch the software with a file (dll) called lame_enc.dll which is available for free at dll-files.com.

It is a cross-platform software which means it works on Microsoft Windows, Mac OsX and Linux operating systems.

There is a lot of features that Audacity has to offer like :-

  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.
  • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
  • And more!

But if you are into serious sound editing, softwares like Sony’s Soundforge for example is a great and value for money software.

Linux Laptop Challenge

Yeah, as ever, I can’t be satisfied with Microsoft Windows yet again.

I’ve tried 2 distributions of Linux so far, Vector and PC Linux OS, which seem to be a downward spiral and somehow or rather, I failed and went back to Windows.

This time around I will be a bit precautious in my next act.

I’ve been reading a lot about Wine and stuffs on how you could actually get Windows application on Linux platforms and this time around I’ll be doing a lot more research before I “walk the plank” .

There’s a couple of distros that might attract me so far …. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Sabayon and Puppy Linux.

(Note : Most of them are on Gnome)

I prefer KDE environment actually but having tried both the latter and XFE (Vector Linux), I will try my luck on this environment this time around.

Hopefully it will work OK (for the third time of my experience) and if you have any suggestions on which distro I should install on my laptop, drop me a comment …… best yet (which distro has Wine running Windows applications perfectly).

Onward to the Penguin …. till next post.

HiVision Mininotes Are World’s Cheapest Laptops

The mini notebook or mini laptop is the biggest buzz recently and it is quite interesting to see almost majority of the laptop manufacturers out there leveraging on this market.

Asus has started out with the Eee PC series and soon you see a bunch out there …. that include laptops heavyweights HP, Acer and Dell who released the Netbook, Aspire One and Mini9 respectively.

However China’s own HiVision ain’t far behind either.

Recently they released a series of mini notebook series at an extremely shocking price ($98) !

How do I know about this?

Just check out the video below.

Talk about being affordable ….. THIS IS DEFINITELY THE ONE !

Comments welcome :) .
