“I see it, I need it, I see it ….. I need it!”

This is part of the post chorus from Static-X’s single “Push It” which sometimes electrifies me. Somehow or rather I could relate this at the time I very thirsty and a cool can of Pepsi could quench my thirst.

Hey, don’t get me wrong. I’m not changing my perspective of my laptop blog to a music one or even promoting Pepsi, for this instance, but it makes me wonder that the importance of computer technology is to us and how we can’t seem to live without.

As Wayne Static (lead vocals of Static-X) puts it in the above phrase; it’s a relation to technology because I certainly needed it to write this post article.

I might think it as a daily supplement, similar to the vitamins and minerals, due to the fact computer technology has changed so much and becoming an essential part of our daily lives.

Just take for an example, chatting or some might call it “instant messaging” or IM.

During the early days where the internet is still very new, users will have to go to a certain chat room via the internet; getting themselves registered and start chatting.

There’s no GUI whatsoever just plain text and people are already getting themselves excited!

These days chat rooms are more sophisticated yet user friendly and GUI galore as well. Moreover softwares are now even ready made free for users to download like MSN, Yahoo Messenger, QQ, Skype, AIM, etc.

Not only these messenger programs allows you to only chat but they can even allow you to view your e-mail, play games, share files (which includes photos and videos) with each other and even make landline or mobile calls.

Smilies can now be inserted with ease and it is very much a user’s requirement nowadays.

With the world chatting easily, communication is not only depends much on the normal telephone.

Even when you’re mobile, your laptop / notebook computer is your best friend as it allows communication done with ease wherever you are (provided there’s internet access).

    Asus Released 1 TeraByte Notebook!

Filed Under (Notebook Hardware, Notebook Reviews) by Mohd Fauzi A Rahman on 15-01-2008

    Yes, you heard it right.

It was at this premier event (CES 2008 in Las Vegas) that Asus, one of the leading notebook makers in the world, unveil the gem of the new year.

The M70 and M50 are the 2 models designed to have this mighty storage capacity.

However the difference between these 2 models apart from the rest is that, the Asus M50 and M70 are using 2 (500Gb) to meet up the storage needed as per required.

Well, this simply means that normal notebooks are using 1 hard disk; these 2 models are using 2 hdds!

The M50 is stated to have a 15.4 inch LCD display, wherelse the M70 has a 17 inch.

As the you can see, this is a much anticipated notebook and may as well be a great replacement to the desktop in the near future.

    Laptop Hard Drives Hit 500GB!

Filed Under (Notebook Hardware, Notebook Talk) by Mohd Fauzi A Rahman on 05-01-2008

    That’s right.

Something what we consider impossible in the past is gonna be released next month.

Hitachi has announced that it will be releasing the Travelstar 5K500 which could cost a whopping $400 and will be expecting high demand for this high capacity storage.

High flyers in mobile storage hard disk has include Toshiba (320 GB) and Fujitsu (300GB).

Hitachi is also going to release a 400GB hard disk though which a $50 less than the 500GB.

However there’s some laid back to this.
The size of the 500GB is expected to be thicker by 3mm due to the additional platter installed.
Current hard disk uses 2 platters (plates for data storage).

But seriously, by the naked eye ….. 3mm is a minor factor and hardly be seen.

We await developments on the release of this ultra cool hard disk.

Compression : Zip or RAR Your Laptop Files?

Filed Under (Notebook Reviews, Notebook Software, Notebook Talk) by Mohd Fauzi A Rahman on 04-01-2008

When it comes to compressing your notebook computer files, there’s always a debate on which is better.Zip or RAR?

Let’s look at the overall perspectives.
When it comes to compression (or should I say zipping) ……
Majority will relate this to WinZIP.

Take note : - WinZip is a software and it’s not the process of compression

Furthermore it will cost you $29.95 (basic version) or $49.95 (if you are going for the Pro version).
It is a trialware nonetheless and if you desired to use it after the evaluation period, you need to pay for it.

    What about RAR then?
Much as similar to Zip, RAR is another compression file format.
However if you want to compress a file to a RAR, you need to use WinRAR another software as similar to WinZIP.

    So which one is better?

Lets look at the advantages of the ZIP compression.
Zip compression is supported and can be converted by most of the compression softwares in the market. The fact that Zip is a standard format in compression, you can also use free softwares to create a Zip file. Not only that, Windows XP and Vista has an in-built Zip function for you to create and extract Zip files thus you may not need to install additional softwares to perform this function.

However if you’re going to extract a RAR file, you need compression softwares to open them.
There are softwares in the market that supports extracting RAR formats (even free softwares!) but to perform creation of a RAR file you can only do it using WinRAR.

Now let’s talk file compression sizes.
It is proven that RAR excels far better in compression than Zip.

    How?
    Take this example :-
I have a collection of pdf files which are needed to be compressed to a single file format.
    The initial size = 5.2mB
Using Zip - the file size will be reduced to 4.6 mB
Using RAR - the file size will be reduced to 4.2 mB
To note : this is just a normal beginner’s test to compression.
The above sizes can be reduced much more further, an intermediate method and the file size can be reduced more significantly ….. especially with the RAR format.

Try out this test and tell me what you think?
